Angry Bankart Repair - Do I have to worry on this.

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
I had Arthroscopic ban-kart surgery on my left shoulder .....

and currently I'm in my 5th week.. post surgery.. and the recovery is good, not much of pain and I'm doing proper PT.

    I have a query here.
Yesterday, I was seated back in my friends's bike, and the bike was running around just 20-25 KM/hr..
I was wearing sling, one around the neck, and the other around my check, to support my shoulder from jerks.

He had to apply sudden disk brake(front)... and I pushed my operated arm against him, and I felt a little jerk and a small pain... but the pain wasn't too much..

Just after 1 to 2 mins, the pain disappear, and it was all normal.. Now I'm not feeling any pain at all....

But normal pain is felt while I do PT..

My question is did I hurt the repair which was done...?????

    your inputs please..

Re: Bankart Repair - Do I have to worry on this.

    Hello Vijaydandur,
As you have had no adverse effects of the sudden braking whilst on the motorbike there is very little chance that you have damaged the repair. A compression force of your arm against the rider in front
would not have injured the shoulder. If you are going to be on the bike in future, be aware that movements of your arm backwards eg reaching behind you or if the bike suddenly accelerates causing you to
twist and stretch your chest muscles at the front of your shoulder could cause excessive elongation of the repair. It should not be possible for this to happen with the sling. The little bit of pain you felt may be
due to a quick contraction of your muscles whilst bracing - a reflex action.
I am glad to report that you should be fine after your scare.
All the best for a full recovery.

Re: Bankart Repair - Do I have to worry on this.

    Hi Vijaydandur,

I have had a Bankart repair and similarly jolted my shoulder forward with some force whilst still in the sling. I had no problems following the jolt and continued to progress as expected. I agree with what MrPhysio+ said regarding why you felt pain. The fact tht it eased off quickly is a good indication that you have not disrupted the surgury, just strained muscle and othe soft tissue that is feeling sensitive at the moment.

    Keep up the PT

Smile Re: Bankart Repair - Do I have to worry on this.

    Dear MrPhysio,
Thanks a lot, though I was feeling no pain after the incident I was worried, but after reading your comments I'm very relaxed now.
It's the 3rd day since the incident happened. I'm feeling lot better and no pain at all in the region where I felt sudden jerk ...
Hence even I'm feeling there isn't any harm.

Last 2 days I haven't done much of PT, because even if there is little damage, I don't want to hurt it again.. But I'll start regular PT from today.

This is my 5 week, and doctor has advised me to be wearing sling till the end of 6 th week.
As you have informed, I'll be very cautious while I travel...

    Thanks again MrPhysio.

    Regards,
    Vijay.

Re: Bankart Repair - Do I have to worry on this.

    Dear Fizzio Phil,

Thanks for sharing your experience. As both of you are saying I wouldn't have hurt the repair.

But I have a question here.
Though there is no pain normally, I do feel some pain while I do some home exercises. Like lifting my left hand(operated) up in front and left(horizantal) directions with the support of right hand, and some times without the support.

    Is this pain normal.

    Regards,
    Vijay.

Re: Bankart Repair - Do I have to worry on this.

    Hi Vjay,
Thanks for the thanks. It is normal to have some soreness whilst in rehabilitation. The bankhart repair will be restricting your shoulder movement via a shortening ofthe muscles
designed to protect the previous shoulder joint instability. Most surgery results in tissue swelling and that inflamation is similar to glue. If you think of the shoulder muscles as a fabric
or cloth, then the inflammatory fluid is like a fabric starch sticking all the various length fibres together. Therefore the short fibres are stuck to the long fibres, restricting movement. This
is a good thing early in the repair as it strngthens the area. A bundle of sticks is stronger than individual sticks. As you progress afterthe sixth week, you will be increasing movement and the
fibres will be starting to separateas the 'starch' breaks up, allowing the individual fibres to move as they need. You will feel some heat, some pain etc as this occurs as when the fibres separate there will be a
tender area between them and this is uncomfortable as the inflammatory fluid also has a nerve irritant mixed in to alert you when things go too far. Mild discomfort that does not last more than two hours after exercise is normal.
    Good luck.
