Painful shoulder injury! Have I torn my labrum?

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hi there physios!

I injured my left shoulder about 2 weeks ago. I noticed a sharp pain at the front of my left shoulder after a game of squash (I play once weekly, left handed). At rest it doesn't hurt, only when I reach forward, upwards and most noticeably when I reach across my body. I can reach behind my back with no problems. It hurts to lie on that side at night. In the last few days it has been clicking (the clicks are a bit painful). Today I played squash again (as you do), and noticed my arm was weaker than usual, but that may have been due to the pain (??).

I have subluxed both my shoulders once or twice in the past.

The internet tells me it might a labrum tear - your job is to tell me it's not. Thanks!!

Re: Painful shoulder injury! Have I torn my labrum?

Hi, it does need more clustered tests to determine what structure more likely involved. But from the info you have provided, especially " arm across body painful" is a typical AC joint sprain symptom. Try to pull your left collar bone downwards and backwards and then lift your arm up, see how you feel? if it feels better, most likely is your AC joint. depends on the severity, you might need more time to rest and rehab before you go back to play though. taping also helps.

Re: Painful shoulder injury! Have I torn my labrum?

    Hey Nelson,
The possible symptoms of labrum tear are:

    • Catching of the shoulder with movement
    • Pain with specific activities
    • An aching sensation in the shoulder joint

But you cannot judge the problem till the time you don't get it tested by a doctor. So, I would recommend you to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
