Singapore intends to add approximately another 2,000 physiotherapists to its current pool over the next 5 years. The growing greying population has fuelled this demand and Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA)’s Head, Dr Celia Tan, is keen to increase the number of physiotherapists to bring the therapist-patient ratio in line with other developed countries such as Australia and the UK. She added that older people are more likely to develop heart disease, stroke and cancer, thereby needing rehabilitation as part of their overall treatment protocol.
SPA also intends to offer postgraduate physiotherapy courses, and a conversion programme to help diploma holders upgrade to a degree at the Singapore General Hospital’s Postgraduate Allied Health Institute (PGAHI).
