Where to study physio in UK?!?!!!!

Hi there,

I'm currently studying medicine in Glasgow (Scotland, UK) but am leaving to hopefully study physiotherapy instead. I'm currently trying to decide what universities to apply to (in the UK). I know a bit about the courses in Scottish cities, but not so much about the courses at English unis.

Is anyone studying physio in England and want to big up their course to sell it to me?!

I've so far applied to Glasgow and Edinburgh. I'm considering Newcastle and Manchester. I have no idea why I'm thinking of these two, they just popped into my head!

Hi Scott,

I study Physiotherapy at St Martin's College (Carlisle) which is now the University of Cumbria. The course and campus is small but extremely friendly! The lecturers are amazingly supportive and very easy to get along with. I've just finished doing my masters at a much larger uni and the difference in support/ availability of lecturers was marked - (having said that MScs are meant to be less supported so maybe thats why.) Placements were comprehensive and ensured everyone got a good grounding in the core areas as well as some more specialised ones. In the third year optional modules were really enjoyable and accommodation was cheap and of a pretty good standard throughout. Finally, the campus has 24 hour computer access, which is monitored by security (so is is safe) which is always a bonus for any last minute assigment alterations lol!

I applied to Nottingham (rejection after interview) Keele(accepted after interview) Hertfordshire(Accepted with no interview) Brunel (accepted with no interview) East london( rejection). Nottingham as a great rep but they tend to cherry pick so can be hard to get into, Keele although lovely would have been a pain to get to ( I did'nt want to live on campus, plus the Physio building seemed dingy, "sorry to anyone studying there") I visited Herts and Brunel and Herts just seemed to have more going for it, all the labs were well equipped and the Tutors were helpful. I've had one placement which went well with lots of support, they have a P and R which is helpful to any one commuting, and well I love it here, haha......Im sure once you ve started to look at uni's more, some will stand out more than others. I did my physio degree at QMU....it was a good course and great being in Edinburgh! The only downside is that it's now moved 8 miles out of town to Mussleburgh, but I hear the facilities are great at the new campus QMU has an excellent physio reputation in Scotland (it's probably the best place to do it given the feedback I've heard about RGU and Glasgow Cally!) Plus if you want a physio job when you graduate the job market is much better here than in England!! Out of the 19 that graduated in my class in November 07, 12 now have jobs- pretty amazing given the current climate!! (oh I did the MSc course hence the small class numbers).

I am going to give an extremely biased yet accurate opinion since I studied the undergraduate course at RGU. Of the scottish unis, from what I understand, Calley and QMU don't get any clinical placements until 3rd year I think this is way to late to get the clinical experience to know that you will enjoy the job for which you are training. The emphasis at RGU is on clinical practice where as at QMU is research. Apart from the fact its 150 miles north of Glasgow the campus is in central aberdeen and all brand new in 2002. If you are based in Glasgow you can get placements here. The RGU masters course is also the only UK course accredited in the US.
I think in general people are pretty narrow minded when choosing unis in scotland and like yourself always go for the main cities. I was offered places at calley and RGU and am happy with my choice. As for employability clinicians I have spoken to seem to think that RGU graduates are ready to hit the ground running rather than having their hand held due the significant differences in clinical education. If you do well on a placement you'll have a good chance of being offered a job there when your qualified.

fair enough, horses for courses! Yes I agree 3rd year is pretty late on...I did the MSc and we went on placement in our 1st year, much better in my mind too! As far as I know the head of physio has plans to change the structure of the course for that and other reasons....you do tend to find employers tend to take on new grads that have trained in that town, I guess out of familiarity as well as a understanding of the training that goes on there. You do of course get exceptions, I proved that myself by training at QMU and then getting a permanent job in Aberdeen, having never set a foot up here when I was a student!

At the end of the day its personal choice, go and have a look at the unis and decide for yourself!

thats quite funny oscar- i trained up the road but now am working in glasgow was never on placement here either!
I suppose if your changing courses you have probably given it a good deal of thought already. I would suggest that you go and do a bit of shaddowing, visit a department and see exactly whats involved.

I'm a final year student in Manchester - it has a great reputation, good facilities (we are moving soon to a purpose built facility in leafy Didsbury) and so on. If you are a student who just does the work and so on it's great but they aren't too supportive of additional work you do. I chair the Students' Executive Committee for the CSP and also sit on CSP Council. I basically have to work my ass of as I get zero support from the uni (other unis do give plenty of support like Nottingham).

Some bits about Manchester though - one of the biggest schools (approx 140 / year); the first physio school in the country (1911); and the first to offer graduate physiotherapy. It has extensive links around the North West and usually yields well rounded and considerate graduates.

Study at Salford! I have just completed my training there and really enjoyed it. It has a brand new health and social care building, which even has a gait lab!

The tutors are really nice and willing to help anytime. This wan one of the main reasons i choose salford, as on the open day they were so friendly.

I had to choose between manchester met and salford and choose salford mainly for the friendly atmosphere. It has the benefits of not being in the city centre but the centre is only 5 mins away. accomodation is one of the cheapest in the country and some of it brand new or if your commuting as i have done for my final year the train station is right next to your building!

Heya, I'm just about to go into my 3rd year at QMU therefore placement year wahoo!!!

One of the reasons I chose QMU was because we didn't go out untill 3rd year and then got to spend the whole year on placement. I had heard that other unis sometimes sent students on placements where they hadn't even covered that topic yet!

But well after 2 years of pure theory and getting a little disgruntled at the lack of placement due to the stress of all the theory (QMU are fantastic for research and giving you good foundations to the profession in the first 2 years) I have decided i'm glad that I have a whole year away from uni to work as a physio. The skills i'm going to learn and lessons I see on placement are going to be invaluable and its really going to give an idea of what it is like to work as a physio.

Ive worked as a HCA in my holidays to keep me sane and give me that upper hand of actually knowing what to expect from the hospital when I go to placement so really that has kept me happy.

QMU is great but you have just got to decied what is your best style of learning in order to choose which uni is best for you with the course that each offer.

Moreover I had no chance to teach Pharmacology, X-rays and so on .It's so bad. In Myanmar doctors don't let us study our lessons freely. You are luck persons. And then I want to go abroad for further study. But, I can't afford to do it. I have a burning desire that is to go to UK for further study. But it likes a dream for me. Just to follow on the thread a bit. I'm hoping to study physio in England or Wales (looking to do 3 yr degree rather than 4) and would like to know what should I be looking for when choosing a college? The class size? The building/facilities on offer? How the programme is taught - self-learning etc.. Clinical placements and support? The location/accommodation?

I'm applying as a mature student so the usual uni activities doesn't bother me really, I just want to study Physiotherapy! Which colleges have a good support for mature students? (I'll be turning 27 when I start)

Im 29 and going into my second year at Herts. As a Uni it supports mature students, and about 10/15 % make up the cohort. I think generally most uni's like mature students, and offer alternative requirement entries, so take a look at each uni's breakdown of the course, some are more practical based, others more theory, so choosing will depend on your learning style. At Herts we do 2 placements in the 1st year (one is a shadow placement) , and three in the second......And of course go to the uni's and have a look round if you can

It seems to be factor across the British Isles. But you have to look at it this way, you'll be a student for 3/4 years and hopefully the employment situation will change. Also, they are crying out for physios in other countries so if you don't mind travelling you'll find a job somewhere!

Cheers for that! I've been trying to find out what the difference in the 3 and 4 year degree programmes. I still don't know. Both do the same amount of clinical hours.

Hi, i've applied to do the MSc (Pre-Registration) post graduate in physiotherapy starting 2009 (although most dont actually start until Jan 2010).

I don't know what ones have the best reputations and in an ideal world if i was to get into all 5, would anyone be in a position to recommend what one they would go to?

I'm currently studying at York st John University and it is amazing!
It's a really small uni as it used to be a college, I see this as a positive though as it means the class sizes are a bit smaller meaning the tutors have more time for you and better hands on experiences. In the first year we do a 5 week placement, 2nd year 15 weeks and 3rd year another 5 weeks. So it really is realistic we learn how to communicate with patients as soon as we get here!
We also have a few classes with the occupational therpaists, which helps us see what their role is and will hopefully help in the clinical setting with successful team work!
I hope this doesn't sound critical either but we have a lot of mature students on the course as the uni is easy to get to and offers a great prospectus! We also have people from literaly all over the place there's a few people from ireland, scotland all over yorkshire, down south and up north!
We are in a brand new building built this year and have 2 labs which we work in aswell, there is roughly 38 or 40 in a class so a great size.
A three year course primarly with placements every year! A lot of work is individual and out side of uni but all comes together in class.
