NICE have now concluded the study "Electrical stimulation (NMES) to improve muscle strength in chronic respiratory conditions, chronic heart failure and chronic kidney disease" Published as IPG677 date: 05 August 2020.

Most of the COPD patients in the trials NICE considered in the above study show very positive statistically significant improvements across all measured outcomes particularly in regaining muscle strength, endurance, breathing capability, Health Related Quality of Life and reduced depression.

NICE concluded that “Evidence on the safety of electrical stimulation to improve muscle strength in chronic respiratory conditions, chronic heart failure and chronic kidney disease shows no major safety concerns" and that “for people who are having an acute exacerbation of their chronic condition and are unable to exercise, evidence of efficacy is adequate".

This encouraging conclusion may have direct implications for the use of NMES in post Covid19 rehabilitation using NMES where symptoms are similar.

Clinicians interested are invited to purchase a Neurocare NMES machine. Please contact Patricia at [email protected] or telephone her on 0208 693 8969
