    Leg pain during jogs

Hello, I am suffering from a sharp pain/ache on the outside of my lower right leg. I have been jogging for 2 years with no problems but over the last 6 months after about 1.5 km, this pain starts and I ultimately have to stop running and sometimes even walking. If I run my hand along the area it feels swollen under the skin.

Any ideas/advice on how I can relieve the pain would be greatly appreciated!

I'd strongly recommend looking into getting a set of tailored orthotic insoles, not the over the counter ones, but from a properly trained physio with the right equipment.

firstly, what does "lower leg" mean in this instance? is this the area around the ankle or whole outside of the leg from the knee down to an ankle? the later could suggest compartment syndrome?

    Re: Leg pain during jogs

Hi, it's the area above my ankle bone, feels like it is a vertival line of about 2 inches. The area becomes massively painful and feels overly firm to touch when jogging.

    Re: Leg pain during jogs

Shin splints isn't really a specific diagnosis, more of an umbrella term. If you are feeling it in the outside of the lower leg during activity, it could be one of many things, but might involve your peroneal muscles and or lateral compartment. If you are feeling it during exercise, it might be the result of excessive work being done by the peroneus longus to stabilise your foot/ankle when running, which is likely due to (as many lower leg injuries) to over-pronation or flat feet, especially if you are feeling it during hte toe off phase of running or the heel strike. Essentially, either the muscles is straining and that is what you are feeling, or the excessive work of the msucles is leading to increased pressure in your lateral compartment (a sheath around the lateral group of muscles in your lower leg) thereby cutting off blood supply etc during exertion. You would probably benefit from an orthotic assessment, or at least a physio assessment where they could identify any biomechanic issues you have. This is only a possible cause, not definite, seek help if it continues, cheers

The first thing is the shoes to go running in. You should replace your shoes often and make sure you have a good pair of shoes or running.

    Taping
If the pain is near the heel there are chances you may have Achilles Tenditis, it is a very common reason for calf pain and the main cause is overuse of the tendon muscles. All you need at this moment is a good massager; you can try out OSIM uSqueez warm a leg massager with a wrap around power squeeze to deliver a massage to feet, calves and ankles. It relives strain and alleviates muscles aches by stimulating the vital acupressure points. The inbuilt foot roller delivers an effective foot reflexology massage to relieve sores and improve blood circulation. This massager will help you get rid of the pain, but you need to restrain yourself from activities which would add to the pressure on the leg. Other important things you should take care of are wearing a running shoe with a stiffer sole, wrap the foot with a tensor bandage with moderate compression.
