help with one of the competencies please

Advertise your physiotherapy job on Physiobob's Job
    Hi there,

Can anyone tell me how they evidenced the competencies re: the healthcare system in New Zealand and the Waitangi Treaty. I have read about both the subjects on the internet but I do not know how to evidence it other than printing off what I have read. Can anyone help. Thanks

Re: help with one of the competencies please

    Hi
I was going to do the same thing, print it off and read it, reflecting on what I've learnt. also saying I've been to NZ and am aware of the diversity of the country. Also was going to use what i learnt in my degree and try and relate it also. Have you got anywhere with it ?

Re: help with one of the competencies please

I printed off some info on the health and disability sector, and info on physiotherapy provision and the waitangi treaty and said that I have read the above and understand the effect it has on society etc.. I put what I have printed off in the appendix. I should know in a few months if that was enough !

Re: help with one of the competencies please

    hi
can someone pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee help me!! because of the shiiiiiiiity job situation in ireland and england i'm thinking of applying to NZ or Canada. But not sure which to choose. Plus side for NZ is that i have aussi citizenship which alows me to work in NZ, there are no exams i think??? But how long does it take to get that portfolio thingy done and for everything to be processed. Is there also guidance from senior staff when you are a new grad. Canada is a place i would love to go to but it is sooooo expensive. $ 2000 in total i have gathered. Really desperate for help bacause like so many am desperate to work (never thought i'd say that). thanks for any fedback
    siobhan
oh ya i did a 4 year sports science degree in ireland and then did a 2 year MSc physiotherapy Accelerated course in the UK, does that make me eligable for NZ, i know they ask that you have a 4 year degree?

Re: help with one of the competencies please

I have been through the registration process, having posted it off in October and been granted approval in April.

For the question on health care structure etc I wrote a short paragraph on the similarities between the NZ and UK health systems so I could reference my uk work experience, I also referred to a couple of articles and sites I'd looked at to get background on the NZ system. BUT I was then asked to provide a written reflective account of the info I'd read, so I had to write a short essay to prove I'd taken in what I'd read.

Make sure you cross reference your competencies to your evidence. The most useful piece of evidence you will have is your degree curriculum/course transcript. I refernced that in virtually every competency. I also used my job description from my nhs work alot.

Absolutely everything needs to be certified e.g. any presentations you have done to colleagues, they are quite particular.

Having spoken to several other people who have been through the process it is rare to get registration on first attempt. It is usual that they will contact you for further information, this means the process can drag out to a few months, but it is do-able so dont give up!

    Good luck

Re: help with one of the competencies please

I am struggling with the competencies too. seems quite overwhelming really all the stuff that they are asking for. I have graduated over 17 years ago and my university no longer has syllabus of the classes I took. I wonder if there is a way to look through what NZ physio schools teach to the students (course outlines etc)

Have a look at Atago http://physio.otago.ac.nz/undergrad/course.asp the comp. states you have to be comp in neuro, resp and ms outpt in the last 10 years. You may have to retrain in some areas.

    Hope this helps

Re: help with one of the competencies please

I frequently referenced several hpc and csp documents (with certified copies) such as standards of professional conduct and csp core standards.

Read through the bits about standards of clinical ethical and professional compentence in particular and you should be able to reference it if your academic transcript is patchy or non existant. As a registered member of the health professions council i am require to ....etc etc

    HI Elomoy.

Thanks for the good advice. When you said you need certified copies of presentations given to colleagues, did yoou mean everyone who attended must sign or that it has to be certified by a JP?

    Regards Cath

Re: help with one of the competencies please

    Hi there,

You only haveto get it signed by one person who can validate that it is your own work and that the content was good and correct etc.. so i would make it your senior.

A helpful hint is that you need to get all work you have done that you are including in you portfolio signed by the relevant people, not just handouts. I had to get about 10 things signed which I hadn't realised was necassary, if in doubt get it signed, that would be my advice.

Re: help with one of the competencies please

    Hi there,
I have just had my application returned as not enough of the documents were certified, can I ask what the wording was you used when getting senior physios to verify appraisals/reflective statements or did you get a solicitor to certify them all?
    Thank you for your help

Re: help with one of the competencies please

My application has just been submitted to the board of assesors so I cannot say for sure yet. My seniors verified any work which I included in my application eg, my appraisals, handouts, operational policies etc.. They wrote something like 'I declare or confim that this is a true copy of Kelly Robinson's work' or 'I declare that this is a true copy of the presentation given by Kelly Robinson which was delivered well and the content was appropraite and correct'

    Hope this helps

P.S. You have to do a piece of reflection for the competency regarding Healthcare in NZ

Re: help with one of the competencies please

    Hi

I don't have the application with me at present but most of the answers are in it. Any copied forms need to verified by solicitor. In the application form it says you have to get any talks that you presented singed by your senior, I just got them to sign everything, they signed name, print named, and job description of everything I was summiting e.g. assessment sheets, hydro ref forms, ICU assessment forms.

I hope its enough, we will see

Re: help with one of the competencies please

I finally got my registration!!!! All I can say to everyone is to be as thorough as possible, get everything countersigned and that it does happen. It took me Feb and March to do my portfolio. It is a matter of trawling through the competencies one point at a time and listing the experience and evidence you have to support it and then putting it in appendices. It took and until June to get the final result.

Good Luck everyone I know it can look daunting but if you got through your degree you can do this.

    Hi
I recently spoke to a Kiwi physio who also said it might be a good idea to reflect upon the cultures in england when displaying your awareness of the Treaty of Waitangi. E.g. I have written a reflection upon a session i attended upon the somalian culture and how i applied this to my practise and then relate this to your knowledge of the diverse cultures in new zealand.

But yeah its difficult and SLIGHTLY overwhelming!!!
