Depression and anxiety are such disorders which most people face in there life as some stage for one reason or the other. If it's children the pressure of studies gets over their head and if it's adults the pressure of work attracts depression. Rather than going on drugs, one should look for the reason behind there problem . Keeping yourself busy and changing the schedule also helps sometimes to get over stress and depression.
I am not a doctor, just sharing my personal experience as I have had depressions and anxiety for sometime. The best way to get over anxiety and depression is to take a break from your regular schedule, go out, and take good sleep. This helps in clearing the mind and try consulting a specialist who can suggest you as how you can get over your problem.

Hi,
to Darrbo: I'm feeling quite upset about your post, so just have to comment.
There is a huge difference between feeling depressed and having depression. The first one is indeed, what most people get at least once through their lifetime and you have descibed tools to deal with that. However, clinical depression is an entirely different matter. There is often not "a problem" attached to it and it is not about clearing your mind. Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain and unfortunately, quite often, the best way to get yourself back in control is with the aid of drugs. I'm sorry, but I just know of too many people, who have killed or attempted to kill themselves after "a good sleep".
to Pulke: There is a large variety of tests for Depression and Anxiety disorders. In NZ, these are done by Psychyatrists and occasionaly Psychologists and fall outside the scope of Physiotherapy.
Kind regards,
Andrea
Yoga is an excellent exercise for 'stress relief'. Sharing your problems with your loved ones can also help you get rid of stress. Aggressiveness and headaches are some of the physical symptoms of anxiety and stress.
This thread has really degenerated into people peddling their idiosyncratic drug rehab programmes (marymn, kristy85) or medications (darrbo). Just a reminder: This is a physiotherapy/physical therapy site and posts should be limited to this area of practice. It is concerning that favourite treatments are being touted.
Physiotherapists can and should be able to screen patients that are depressed or anxious for the purpose of referring them on to health professionals who have this scope of practice: generally that is GPs, Psychiatrists and clinical psychologists.
Depression and anxiety can be life threatening and serious illnesses that need appropriate work up and management.

are measures for SCREENING not DIAGNOSISING paitents in medical/rehab environments. But the key about this is that such measures can strengthen one's decision-making about referring on. A physio should never prescribe a treatment for a condition beyond ones scope of practice.
