Locum work

I'm considering Locum work & wondered if anyone had done it and what their experience was? Can you get the odd days work here & there or do you normally have to commit to a 3 month block for example? Thank you

Hey Rjm, Although, I haven't done the locum work, I found the following advantages of it on net.

• Independence to work when and where you choose.
• Possibility to take a part-time locum job.
• Working less hours may give you more time to study for exams.
• You can try working in different hospitals.
• May earn a higher rate of pay per day.
• Combine locum work with other employment outside medicine.
• Combine locum work with hobbies / special interests / charity work.
• Temporary employment when waiting for permanent jobs to be advertised.

Hi, From a companies point of view - a Locum physio is always greatly appreciated and can be a real benefit to a business. We currently have 24 locum physios on our books and over 140 static physios - and although the static physios are equally vital for keeping out 100+ clinics open, the locums play a very important role in filling spaces in the clinics. All of our locums are paid a Salary rate (£22k+) compared to the static physios being paid on a per appointment basis (due to them being able to see more patients per day by skipping on the additional travel). Both have their pro's and cons. We do not contract any of the work either, so both out static and locum physios are on full time perm contracts (subject to probation period), although the 40 hour week can be worked in 4, 4.5 or 5 days.
