Hello All,

Can anyone clarify the difference between heterotopic ossification and myositis ossificans. I have had a frustrating evening searching the internet trying to figure out any differences. Some say that heterotopic ossification is just the revised name for myositis ossificans (doesn't just happen in muscle tissue and isn't always associated with inflammation). Others say that heterotopic ossification is the term used for neurogenic origin (e.g. post spinal cord injury). I have also heard that myositis ossificans has more to do with trauma to muscle tissue (e.g. quadriceps contusion, adductors in horse back riders). Please help.

Kevin
