    Fractured Talus

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hi Everyone,

I was hoping to get some feedback to see how long recovery time might take. This is what I was examined with: Lateral soft tissue swelling. There is a nondisplaced oblique fracture of the most lateral aspect of the dome of the talus. The tibiotalar joint is intact. Impression: Fractured talus.

Basically what happened was I jumped off of a deck in the dark that was much higher than I thought. So I was not braced properly, so when I landed on the ground I did not roll out of it or was really prepared for impact.

I am a 32 year old male and very active (well not now) and in good shape. I walked on it for about 2 1/2 weeks after I injured it before going to the ER & getting the X-ray done.

I don't have insurance so I went to the ER. I was told by the PA that no surgery is required and that healing would take 4-6 weeks. After doing research online it looks like 6-8 weeks or 6-10 weeks is the correct time frame for healing an injury like my mine.

What I would like to know is does that sound accurate? I am still in a splint and have been on crutches for about 25 days now. I am wondering if I should just go back to the ER in about another month to make sure my bone healed completely, or if I should see an orthopedic dr. first.

Also I am wondering if pain & swelling is still consistent with an injury like this even after the fracture heals. Could there be major ligament or tendon damage which I heard takes longer to heal than bone? I do martial arts, so I am wondering how long until I can start training hard again. I know there will be a period of rehab, just not sure how long.

I just want to give myself the max time to make sure it heals completely, so I don't risk re-injuring my foot.

Oh one more thing, someone with a similiar injury told me NOT to take calcium supplements while I heal, that it would not heal right if I do due to an overload of calcium to the fracture site. Is this true? They gave me other advice like not drinking alcohol (I met them in a bar), avoiding dairy products & eating lots of buckweat.

Any feedback, experience or advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Tom

    Hi buddy,
there are chances of ligament injury associated with this sort of fracture. An Wikipedia reference-linkMRI Scan only help to rule out this.
the healing time will be a bit longer ,as talar dome is part of ankle joint filled with synovial fluid.Presence of synovial fluid usually delays intra articular fracture healing
