How to activate glut max and shut off dominant hams for person with LBP

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
I have a client who has dominant hamstrings inhibiting her gluts so that they dont do much at all and she demonstartes poor control over them leading to mechanical LBP particularly involving her job stocking shelves and lifting boxes. I've tried numerous glut max exercises (bridging, prone hip extension, standing hip flexion step ups) all without success. Her hams are strong, dominant, and large and wont relax at all. Any other suggestions or links I could look at??

Re: How to activate glut max and shut off dominant hams for person with LBP

    Hi mnixon,

If the person is having trouble initiating a glut max contraction, I would have a look at what other inhibitors are present.

If someone has a tendency to drop into an anteriorly tilted pelvic position, they can sometimes find it difficult to isolate glute contraction. It might be worth looking at their Rec Ab strength + Lumbar extensor / Hip flexor mobility?

You mention that hamstrings are dominant and strong, what is their hamstring ROM like?

I agree with AzzaRehab, check other possible inhibitors and maybe you should start with more simple ex-s
