Brief Medical History Overview
Broken Tibia & Fibula and Fractured Tibia (Spiral)
Looking for some advice. I've been in plaster for 12 weeks now. Full leg plaster for 8 weeks and 4 weeks in a cast that's just above the knee. When I broke my leg the consultants mentioned the possibility of an operation to plate the leg. However, as I was 7 weeks pregnant and the xrays showed that the bones were in a good position they said they were happy to leave it as it was. Was this the right decision?
When I've been back to the clinic (3 weeks and 8 weeks after injury) the xrays have not shown much bone growth. The consultant seemed quite surprised at this but has not mentioned how the pregnancy could effect this. Could the pregnancy significantly effect the healing process? I eat a well balanced diet particularly due to the pregnancy.
The consultant made the decision to cut my cast down on the last visit due to a few factors, such as, I had to see a physio for severe pelvic pain and a sacral iliac joint belt I had to wear was restricting my movement and balance when using crutches resulting in a few bad tumbles. Things have improved but was this the right decision?
I am looking to buy a knee high pneumatic walking brace - would this benefit me?
Finally, what would the expected healing time be for a break like this? I know this can vary for each individual but my fear is that as I get bigger/heavier during my pregnancy it will impact upon my getting around and any physio I will have to do once the cast comes off. I've had visions of going into labour and STILL having this cast on!
Lots of questions, I know but I would really appreciate any insight, advice or reassurance...
