Should I run through knee pain or just accept that running may not be for me?

When I have been running the last two times, my knees have started hurting and I've had to limp back. Pain improved after I stopped running.

I've heard that sometimes it's a good idea to run through pain but don't know if that applies to knees - I don't want to damage them.

My trainers are good but I don't run very often. could it be that my body isn't used to running yet and that it will improve if I build up my runs gradually?

Thanks
