Fractured fibula that has not healed after 16 weeks and when can I start with physio

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hi

I fractured my fibula on the 22nd of September 2013 and it is a Weber C fracture. Since I have been diagnosed I have been in a moon boot, however the break has not healed as yet. According to the x-ray taken on the 11th of January the fracture lucency is still visible with signs of incomplete healing. How long can it take for such a fracture to heal? When will I be able to start walking on the leg without the moon boot and when will I be able to start with physio? Will I be able to go to the gym but not do any exercises that has any influence on my ankle?

Your consultant should instruct you when you can start physiotherapy. Your physiotherapist can then tell you when to start full loading of the leg and when to start gym exercise. There is no golden rule. Just to give you an idea. The Fibula is one of the fastest healing bones. Normally you could start with weight bearing after 1.5-2 months after immobilization. You have definitely a delayed healing therefor any speculations are futile, the reasons for this delay can be numerous.
