    Age: 31, Female, Presenting Problem Since: 10 years, Symptom Behaviour: worse, Symptoms Worse (24hr Behaviour): Throbing with swelling, Aggravating Factors:: running, walking more than a mile, Easing Factors:: rest, No Investigations, No Diabetes, No history of High Blood Pressure, No Medications, No Osteoporosis, No Hx of Cancer, No Unexplained Weight Loss, No Bowel/Bladder issues, Other Info: None

    Question Right Ankle Constant Pain

    Hello,

    Can anyone help me diagnose and give me advice on my ankle problem please? I am 31 and I have played football since I was 9 and for the last 10 years I have been plagued with pain in my right ankle (see attachment for my ankle pain location) .
    I can not play football any more because if I do my ankle just swells up and starts to throb the next day and it also swells up I walk more than 1 mile. I have been putting it off getting it looked at for years but it is driving me insane now because I cant even run on a treadmill without it giving me pain.

    Can anyone tell me what could be wrong with it so I can decide what to do ?

    The circled area on your picture is the Peroneal Tendon. It is common to develop tendonitis on this tendon from simple overuse. Tendonitis is when the tendon becomes inflamed and irritated. Commonly this is caused by repetitive motion and continuous overuse. The best thing to be doing for this is focus on cold therapy. Put a cold compress on it a few times a day but most importantly right after being on it. The cold will bring down the swelling and inflammation and will help ease the pain. Since Tendonitis causes your tendon to become inflamed, blood flow to the area also becomes impaired. After focusing on cold for at least 3-4 days, start treating with anything that increases the blood flow to the area (massage therapy, ultrasound, BFST, acupuncture, etc.). These types of treatment give you the nutrients and oxygen you need to heal but reduce the risk factors involved with a lot of physical activity.

    Of course an MRI is always the best thing to do. It would be good to determine no tearing is present.
