    ORIF post surgerical recovery

2 months ago I had an ankle dislocation with 4 fibula and two tibia fractures. (bike vs. car accident) I had ORIF surgery to stabilize and reposition the fibula (tibia fractures did not require fixation). I am currently transitioning to weight bearing with the use of a walking boot and incorporating about one hour per day on the recumbent bike. I am also trying maintain elevation of the injured leg whenever possible along with ice treatment 3 times daily.

That said I am still getting a significant increase in swelling and pain with the additional activity, however, the pain seems to be in soft tissue rather than bone. Especially sore is the front of my shin and and mid-calf. My physiotherapist considers the swelling/discomfort to be normal and expected as I progressively increase my activities.

I would welcome any feedback from those who might have had similar injuries or treated other with similar injuries.

    Re: ORIF post surgerical recovery

Dear Sir, there is a bit mistake in your knowledge, it is actually Fibula which doesn't usually requires fixation post #. And if the case is more than 2 months old, i think you should stop applying ice and try some heat modality. A Crape bandage will do good for your swelling. All the Best. Happy Recovery.

    Taping
I had a plate and nine screws inserted into my fibula 3 weeks ago to repair a large spiral fracture. I am now walking unaided in a CAM boot.

I agree that icing it so regularly is unnecessary. My girlfriend is a physio and has me with a heat pack on it every night for 20-30 minutes followed by a few different stretching exercises. Just as the bone needs time to heal, so too does the soft tissue, and to regain its strength. It is important to be diligent with your recovery, without overdoing it.

    Good luck
