job situation in New Zealand

Hi,

I am a UK registered physio and practising here in London. Because of the second generation investors the pay scale is reducing considerably which is making it worse.
Well, I am thinking of applying for a New Zealand registration followed by immigration. Before I do that I am confused about the physiotherapy job prospects in there. Well, I went through MOH website yesterday which told me about physios in long term shortage list. But even that dosent solve my queation. Can anyone help me with that?

Hi Kevin,
the job situation is hugely dependend on your area of speciality and the location of where you would like to work in NZ.

Best way to get an idea about job availability is to go on job search websites and see for yourself what's on offer.
On TradeMe there is currently 15 full time positions advertised ... that's for the whole of New Zealand ...
E.g.
Healthcare Jobs, Nursing Jobs & more on SEEK New Zealand
NZ Herald Jobs - New Zealand Employment, Careers & Job Search
Healthcare jobs in New Zealand on Trade Me Jobs
Home ? Kiwi Health Jobs

Or go to the DHB websites if that's where you would like to work.
Please be prepared that income in NZ is a lot lower than in the UK with less annual leave and less sick leave.

Hi,

Thats tragic to know just 15 jobs in whole NZ. Well, I am a MSK physio and I am aware there will be loads like me. Job situation in UK is going worst to worse as well. Physios are fiting among themselves to quote the lowest rate for patients. The average pay of a fresher is £21-27k per annum. I believe its $38-48k in NZ which is quite similar. What are your suggestions?

It is in case you work a 40 hr week and have 4 weeks annual leave as we do.

If you want to come over for work experience and have a different lifestyle - why not.
It's a beautiful country, plenty of outdoor life and activities - just don't expect to go back home witha stack of money....

During a meeting last year, I heard of Physios who had potential job offers before even starting to get into contact with the Physio Board here - depending on them being successful in gaining registration (which should not really be difficult with a British degree), but registration took a while and a lot of them lost those job offers before they even arrived. So, just be careful.
The job situation was always better in Australia, but I have recently heard that that's not as easy any more either.

Thanks for the update. Well, yes, it actually depends on the destiny. The question is do physios earn sufficiently to have a good lifestyle and support their families? Also is there any scope of private practice? If yes are there any strict requirements?

If you are on your own - yes, definitely. If your wages have to feed a family of 4 ... hm, it's possible, but tough.

At the moment, we only have a general scope for 'normal Physios'. There is also one for post grad Students and one for presenters, but I think that these people are not allowed to work besides their specially approved area.
The Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand > The Practice of Physiotherapy
There is work done at present for "Specialist Physios" e.g. in MSK or Neuro etc., but they are awfully strict - minimum qualification is MSc, you have to be published and continue to publish, etc.. mainly something for the Physios at Uni or in research posts. :-)

Hello having just read this post, I am wondering if there is much scope at all for a British physio to work solely within MSK? If we look at private practice does this offer greater possiblity in doing outpatient MSK work?

Hi,
good question with simple answer: No, sorry, that's not possible. ALL Physios - from NZ or elsewhere - have to register with the PT Board under the general scope.

Better job prospects once registered with a) excellent work experience in the field (I would guess, about 5 yrs +) or b) done your masters in a specific Msk area.
