spinal cord stimulation

35 year old male has been offered Spinal Cord Stimulation as a treatment for chronic pain in his knee following injury. Apparently a stimulator will be inserted in his back and another in his pelvic region. I cannot find any information on this procedure. Is it to rebuild muscle or reduce pain?
