Hello,

I'm a physio student currently on my msk outpatient placement.

A patient came to me after a surgery done to lengthen his leg (externally fixated). He presents with an ankle fixed in plantarflexion, unable to reach neutral position, weakness on the whole lower limb, leading to an important Tredelenberg type limb. He's mobilizing with crutches (he wasn't before the operation). It turned out he has polio.

My clinical educator advised me to put him on a strengthening programme and to stretch/mob his ankle to regain ROM. However, I read in some articles that a strengthening programme for polio pts could make things worse and that stretches are sometimes not advised.

Any advice/input/thoughts?
Thanks a lot.
