Hi Everyone,

I am currently studying an access to physiotherapy course at college. Part of the course involves asking a qualified physiotherapist the following questions. I would be extremely grateful if anyone could answer these for me

· Why did you want to become a physiotherapist?

· How long have you been a physiotherapist?

· What qualifications did you have to obtain to become a physiotherapist?

· What was the training like?

· How much practical work was there during the training?

· How long did it take you to find a job once qualified?

· Did you have a period where you were a junior physiotherapist? If so how long was this?

· Which area did you specialise in and why?

· Do you think the job role of a physiotherapist has changed since you have been doing it?

· How do you feel about your job role as a physiotherapist?

· What are the positive and negative points of being a physiotherapist?

· Why did you want to become a physiotherapist?
When I was at school I sustained multiple injuries to my shoulders and had to see many physiotherapists - I became interested in what they offered and loved sports - so here I am!

· How long have you been a physiotherapist?
I have been a physiotherapist for 8 years

· What qualifications did you have to obtain to become a physiotherapist?
I have a BPhty (Bachelor of Physiotherapy) from New Zealand

· What was the training like?
I enjoyed the training. A good mix of theoretical and practical learning made the days at university pass quickly. A good bunch of intelligent people that all competed for positions within the school made the learning environment rich and rewarding

· How much practical work was there during the training?
In the first year we had as many as 5x 2-3 hour practical sessions per week but this increased to full time practical towards the end of the training years.

· How long did it take you to find a job once qualified?
I had a job offer within a month from leaving PT school, however I understand it is not so easy these days for our new grads.

· Did you have a period where you were a junior physiotherapist? If so how long was this?
I was a junior PT for around 3 years, however your seniority is not dictated by time but by effort, qualifications and work standard

· Which area did you specialise in and why?
I specialised in orthopaedics and sports medicine as I have always liked the idea of sports medicine and intrigued by the mechanics of the body

· Do you think the job role of a physiotherapist has changed since you have been doing it?
I think physical therapy is always changing, as is all aspects of health care. The rate of change is dependent on the areas with which you are referring..

· How do you feel about your job role as a physiotherapist?
I enjoy my job - I enjoy it more when people are grateful for the service and benefit they receive... I feel we have a lot to offer our patients, and as long as we all strive to become better therapists and know our limitations, we will still be required within the scope of rehabilitation.

· What are the positive and negative points of being a physiotherapist?
+ve - Helping people and getting to mix your day up with practical work and problem solving
-ve - Paperwork - which seems to be ever increasing and never ending
