Hello, The ultrasound frequency determines the penetration, meaning that in Recovery unites you will find some custom settings like 1MHz , 3 MHz most commonly. The 1MHz its used for in deep recovery, like US for coxarthrosis, and 3 MHz is commonly used for superficial areas like gonarthrosis and so on. Meaning that the difference is from the distance of the head of the US to the targeted area. And yes the intensity affects the penetration depth. For Ex. hip pains of coxarthrosis will go for 1MHz and 0.8 w/cm2, maybe 1 w/ cm2 after a good knowledge of patient history. for gonarthrosis maybe 0.6-0.8 W/cm2 and 3MHz. Hope it helps.
