Due to various contraindications I would not permit the patient to administer the US themselves on my clinic. It opens up a range of issues with potential risk of a claim again you that is not worth bothering about.
It is understood however that anyone can buy an ultrasound unit for themselves and do their own treatment at home so it does pose a contra argument that no special training is really needed to use it. After all it was invented for use on greyhounds after they finished a face and on race horses as well. Don't suppose they can administer it themselves though!

dear collegaue,
If you have decided the patient needs Ultra Sound YOU GIVE IT.
In my opinion you must never let a patient treat themselves. Your remain responsible at all times as long he/she is being treated by you. Never walk away.
I know it is done, even with other applications, but I do not think anyone of us was taught to leave our patient to do it themselves.
kind regards
Esther
Hello Esther,
I know your post is quite old but I'm relatively new to this site and have been sick in bed the last few days so loads of time on my hands and wanted to ask you something on this topic.
Leaving aside the argument for/against US and its placebo effect, would you leave a patients side while you had an ice/heat pack applied to them or would you allow a patient to perform an ice cup massage on themselves?
I know these exaples don't have as big a capacity for injury as US does(periosteal burn, etc) but you say never leave a patient. Also if you give a patient exercises and they do them incorrectly whilst unsupervised and injure themselves is it not the same liability as them doing the US wrong after you instructing them clearly in its application?
Well system is really good there, An American infertility clinic is offering free human eggs to one British participant for attending an informational seminar on Wednesday in London.

Hi Joseph,
Are you sure you have posted in the right section?
Your post doesn´t seem to have anything to do with the subject.

ALWAYS DOING IT MYSELF!!!....................COZ many patient hnk of heat raher the ultrasonic effect.......n place it at a point rather moving it............n got SHEARING/StANDING waves..............
Sounds like a general future of physiotherapy debate reallyIt is understood however that anyone can buy an ultrasound unit for themselves and do their own treatment at home so it does pose a contra argument that no special training is really needed to use it
Indeed, it is more the appropriate indication to use it more than the use of it that is the real question. And knowing what the contraindications are. I do know that it is common in rugby and football clubs for all the players used to EPA devices to just grab a bed and hook themselves in. Not great for the PI insurance folk but it does lend support to the cause that physio is about hands on treatment and decision making and not the administering of EPA which assistants and perhaps patients could even do for themselves (once shown how).
Note I am not endorsing that!!

I want to know this also Please tell us!!
As all joseph321's posts lack any real substance, perhaps he is more interested in advertising accounting courses in India than in the subject matter of the website.
I am sure there are thousands of physios on this site dying to no about accounting courses in India
Doing with my self... because its important for patient and the technique we use...
Thanks for sharing this useful information.
Additional Comment I forgot:
