Mabu25,
Having a fibula fractute or an ankle fracture is different. Please clarify your MD's diagnosis, as well as your symptoms (pain, swelling etc).

Hi,
I found this forum on the web due to lack of info given by my doc, so maybe someone can just post a link to the most relevant thread or a web page?
I fractured my ankle a week ago, put in a cast for a couple of days after an x-ray, then saw a specialist who gave me a tubi grip and said I could pretty much do what I liked except run for six weeks. It doesn't feel 'right', but what are the pros/ cons of walking etc. during recovery? How long before an 'all clear' and no pain - I'm not seeing anyone for follow up, so thankyou in advance for any help....

Hi,
The doctor said, and I could see on the x-ray, 2 fractures (which he called hairline) in the fibula - apparently a non-weight baring bone and therefore the 'right' one to damage', so I am confused why it still hurts to walk. This is nearly 2 weeks after the fracture, much of the swelling has gone down, but I still have a blue foot. I thought I should be able to walk with a normal gait and pain free by now? I know it's hard to help without an x-ray, but any advice appreciated - I'm an active person.
The fibula isn't a hugely weight bearing bone - thats true, but it is still treated with a period of immobilisation and rest following fracture (depending on the severity). Your ortho consult may be entirely correct with what he's said but go back to your doctor... After fracture or even just a sprain of the ankle we loose proprioreception - which is basically your ability to feel the ankles position, this affects your balance but more importantly if it isn't rehabilitated correctly then you will be more likely to do ankle sprains in the future.
You need to see a physio to have your ankle rehabilitation guided correctly.
I'm not sure wether you can front up to a physio in the UK like you can in NZ. If you can then go straight to the physio and get a copy of the Xray report for them. If you can't then go back to your GP and request a referral for physiotherapy and get a copy of your xray report for the physio's information.
The point being that you need a follow up to help guide your rehab, you don't want what you have to develop into a chronic problem.
