    re: prevent contractures

Once there is joint contracture only surgery can change that. If it is muscle shortening, keeping the limb in a functional position during day/night will prevent contractures. Passive movements are not likely to make a difference. They serve well as a test to see if contractures are occuring. They can be damaging to tissues if any pressure is applied, and unless new range can be obtained, there is no economic value in doing them.
