Techniques and procedures of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) are well accepted for therapeutic exercise in rehabilitation of orthopaedic problems. Specific application for the treatment of knee ligament instabilities has not been documented in the literature. Spiral and diagonal PNF patterns emphasize rotatory components of joint function and can provide emphasis in selected musculotendinous structures of the knee. This article describes the application of therapeutic exercise techniques and procedures for anteriorcruciate ligament (ACL) and resultant instabilities
Hi colleague,
where is the article you speak of?
Esther
The acl ligament acts as a stabilizator of the knee joint, providing static stabilization and limiting hypermobility. But in the case of a rupture of this ligament we can train the quadriceps to help with the stability of the knee. And pnf, is the best technique for training muscles, because it doesnt specify a function, it does movement in the diagonal plane, hence it uses combined movement. And we can increase the stability and proprioception in the knee joint, using stabilizing reversal and rhythmic stabilization in supine position with flexed knee.
the knee is a joint that its design is for closed kinematic chain activities and for balance, pnf is also useful in creating awareness in the joint during movement.
probably, in the ACL rupture patient, it is Hamstring which could restrict the tibia anterior translation from the femur, Hamstring's strength is extremely important. the use of slow reverse and slow reverse hold could be a nice choice for strengthening the H, while the use of rhythmic stabilization is good for Knee stability.
