My L5 symptoms were caused by an entrapment of the peroneal division of the sciatic nerve at the level of piriformis (Piriformis Syndrome). It was surgically decompressed in April 2012. I still have symptoms such as foot drop.
The confusion in symptoms was caused by a co-existing groin injury, which result in bilateral inguinal hernia, one of which was impinging on the obturator nerve, lateral femoral nerve compression (meralgia paraesthetica) and bilateral conjoint tendinopathies. This was surgically reconstructed in May 2013 and recovery is ongoing.
Due to the nature of this injury, diagnosis was extremely difficult. Overall, it cost me nearly $200,000 to achieve a proper diagnosis. I had 43 MRIs. I had 22 surgeries in total. I was a heavy squash player, which caused the injury.
Good luck to the next poor bastard who has to navigate such an intellectually broken medical institution.
