I have recently conducted a review of the literature on this topic on the management and assessment in physiotherapy. I would like to add that the evidence favoured stretching exercises to be carried out before the first steps of the day and after any lengthy periods of inactivity. Also that the splinting was poorly tolerated in the form of rigid cast types. Two studies reported using a 'sock' type design night splint with a relatively fixed amount of dorsi flexion had increased compliance and better results. I have to agree with the electrotherapy point- although widely used in practice the evidence is inconclusive.

    Thanks

    Thanks Laura for the info,

Thanks sdkashif for the references - i had forgotton this little discussion!

I also wanted to add that if a patient does want to ice it, then i recommend an ice bucket treatment (water with ice on surface - ankle deep) for 10mins - more than that, vasodilation occurs to warm the area up and the effect of ice is then negated!

    Thanks again!
