    Re: Interferential Current for pregnant

I started getting electrical muscle stimulation on my shoulders and lower back 12-18-07. Found out I was 5 weeks pregnant on 1-7-08. Chiropractor stopped treatment as soon as I told him, he acted like it was no big deal but I don't know. I ended up having a miscarriage on 1-29-08. Does anyone think this could have caused the miscarriage? After starting the treatments I started sweating like crazy at night. I was going through 2 or 3 shirts and also socks too in a night.

    Re: Interferential Current for pregnant

    Hi Tilly 6,

There is no certain way of knowing if the electrical stimulation caused the miscarriage or not.

Having said that, i am fairly skeptical it would have been the cause. When you are "5 weeks pregnant", the actual conception time is 3 weeks because it is roughly 14 days from the first of of your last period that ovulation occurs.

Therefore, at 3 weeks after conception, the foetus is TINY - about 2mm or 1/12th of an inch long.

It is much more likely that something like an abnormality caused the miscarriage - 25% of women have miscarriages, not many have electrical stimulation in that time. I am a physio, not a chiro so i am not really defending a colleague, just telling the truth as i see it.

I understand that it is a difficult time and you are looking for answers. I am so sorry for you loss. May God bless you with a child soon.

    Re: Interferential Current for pregnant

    hi!

Quick question, I have a patient with partial tear of left knee ACL, can I apply IFC to her left knee but she's 6 weeks pregnant with history of miscarriage before. I asked my co-workers about it and they said it was okay since it's not directly on her back or abdomen.

    Thanks!

    Elizabeth

    Re: Interferential Current for pregnant

    hi cuddlyss,

    1. it shouldn't be a problem
    2. Why would you want to use IFC for in particular? Get some ice on it for swelling, get her functionally strong looking for failed load transfer through her L/S, Wikipedia reference-linkSIJ, hips, knees, ankles, feet etc

I really don't like electrotherapy as a general rule but i will admit that i have used it on people with knee pain before and it has helped...however it is only for 1-3 session only...

Lastly, if you mean brooklyn in the USA, i wouldn't bother to do IFC or anything lese that may get the patient to think that it may have been something that you did in the terrible event of a miscarriage. Keep it simple is my suggestion...

    Cheers
