    Spring Ligament Surgery

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
I tore my Spring Ligament falling whilst running in a race 18 months ago. After a long period of trying to to resolve the problem through non- invasive means (several rounds of steroid injections) I finally went into surgery eight weeks ago. They found that the ligament had completely detached. They reattached the ligament, took some tendons from toes to augment the ligament and whilst they had me in there they also went ahead and did a calcaneal osteotomy at the same time.

I was six weeks in plaster, NWB and have been in a boot for the last two weeks, slowly putting more weight through the foot. Applying weight has been rather painful and I spend most evenings, icing to get the swelling down.

My concern is this: the main pain that I feel in my foot is exactly the same pain and in exactly the same place as before the operation, leading me to worry that the operation hasn't worked. I wondered if anyone has had a ligament repair similar to this and could give a clue as to whether this is normal? Does anyone know the details of the operation that would explain why I still have the pain in the same place? What is the recovery time when I can expect the pain to go away please?

I know I'm probably worrying over nothing, but it's been a very long journey for me so would welcome a bit of reassurance.

    Re: Spring Ligament Surgery

I am wondering how your recovery is progressing. I was recently diagnosed with a spring ligament issue -- not sure if it is torn or not. MRI was inconclusive. Have had pain in my mid foot for 20 months. Have tried every conservative treatment short of casting it. Hurt it while training for a Half. Pain is worse today then ever. It looks like I am headed for surgery and am wondering what to expect.

    Re: Spring Ligament Surgery

I am sorry to hear that you have issues with your foot and wish you a speedy recovery.

Unfortunately I can't give you good news from my experiences. I'm almost six months from my operation and whilst the surgery has healed, there has been no improvement in the original spring ligament problem, with pain returning to exactly the same level as before the operation. Whilst this means that I can' run, more seriously it means I experience pain on a constant basis. Yesterday I had to return home to rest foot and take pain killers etc after walking a relatively short distance.

I had another MRI to check if the repair is sound and hopefully get the results in the new year. Am worried that I'm running out of treatment options. For me, the Spring Liagament just won't heal.

    Good luck to you!
