    Chest physiotherapy for bronchiolitis

    Cerebral Palsy In Infancy
    Hello!
I wanted to ask about an experience in different countries- do you use chest physiotherapy for bronchiolitis and if yes then what kind of techniques?
I`m going to write my master degree thesis about chest physio for bronchiolitis and would really appreciate your information.
    Thanks a lot!

    Re: Chest physiotherapy for bronchiolitis

    hello =D
actually i took a chest course when i was in level 8 .. to be honest i didn`t learn much ,, it was all about cupping , postural drainage , breathing exercise ,,etc

i think in bronchiolitis we have to give the patient breathing exercise .. to strengthening and stimulate all parts of lungs ,, also we may use the spirometry .. as an assessment and treatment and also as an outcome maesure for improvement ,,

    Re: Chest physiotherapy for bronchiolitis

    Hi
For my final year project (for my degree in physiotherapy) I did a study on chest physiotherapy and bronchiolitis. This was back in 2003 - so perhaps my knowledge is a bit out of date - my memory of the whole project is a little hazy now anyway. From what I remember, I found that overall the literature at the time was inconclusive - there was a study that was cited by many books which warned against the possible dangers of chest physio in acute bronciolitis (mainly increasing bronchospasm), however when you read the article you will see that the article itself did not actually prove this to be the case. I did a postal questionnaire also of what Irish physiotherapists did in practise when they received acute bronchiolitis referrals. In general there was some confusion amongst physiotherapists with some accepting referrals, others saying that they received no referrals as they believed chest physiotherapy to be contraindicated in such children.
I also remember looking at a masters thesis Queen Margaret College in Scotland - where a physiotherapist studied the effects of chest physiotherapy on children with acute bronchiolitis - you may find referring to it useful.
Hope this helps - good luck with the masters!

    Re: Chest physiotherapy for bronchiolitis

    dear colleagues,

have just read some relevant information.
The AAP have just published guidelines for the treatment of bronchiolitis but that information is not freely accessible. The Scottisch Guidelines are - and they include some information on physiotherapy as a possible choise.
go to Clinical Evidence: The international source of the best available evidence for effective health care
and look under conditions and guidelines for bronchiolitis and children

    Hope this helps a bit.

p.s. I found this information by using the google search engine.

    Esther
