    Brief Medical History Overview

    ankle and calf ache

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hi,

I am in my twenties and had some pain in my shins, which I now know is medial tibial stress syndrome. However, at the time I continued to run despite the pain and I started to develop a slight ache in my right ankle after running. One day after training I was limping as it was now painful. The pain was around my lateral malleolus and I was unable to fully weight bear on that leg. I also had anache across my foot and up my calf muscle.

This was 9 weeks ago now. I was told that I have an ankle impingement by a podiatrist, but after looking up this condition I do not beleive this is the case. I have been completely resting my ankle since and still I have a constant ache around my ankle and up my calf muscle both days. I am unsure of what brings it on because it doesn't seem to correlate with resting, walking or standing.

It is driving me crazy now as I do triathlon and I am unable to cycle or run and it is does not seem to be improving at all.

I would be so greatful if anyone has any idea what this could be,

    Many thanks.

    Re: ankle and calf ache

dear i think you must be having the ankle strain injury, the physiotherapy non thermal ultrasound would help you to get it heal in 7-10 days, and you can also go through laser with its healing program

Will need to get it assessed again. If you have been resting it for 9 weeks with no reduction in symptoms, it is likely not as simple as an inversion sprain (lateral ankle sprain). A physio can rule this out pretty quickly (ATFL draw test etc). Some possible ideas may be referred pain (lower back or hip) or compartment syndrome (anterolat compartment?) w/ secondary neural impingement referring to the foot, ankle impingement (as the pod said)... Basically you will need to get it looked at by a solid Musculoskeletal physio. Will be quite a difficult one to talk out in a forum environment. In saying that, if you have ANY more symptoms you can describe it may help narrow things down, let us know!

No hip/knee/lower back symptoms? Any swelling, inflammation when it hurts the most? Tenderness anywhere when poking around? Any restrictions in particular movements? Bending the ankle forward/side to side?

Occasionally inversion sprains can be nasty and turn quite complex (avulsion fractures, malleolus fracture w/ the sprain) it COULD possibly be a factor. These can become pretty chronic, painful ankles for months on end. If all else fails an x-ray may help clear any structural damage, with an ultrasound to check out your ligamentous support systems etc. depends on how much you want to know what is going on
