Another ankle sprain question...
Hello,
This is my first post on this forum. I've found it extremely valuable. I read thru some of the ankle-sprain related questions and I already learned a lot, but I'd like to ask about my case looking for any advice.
I'm 33 yrs old and I did my first sprain 11 yrs ago on my left ankle. 7 yrs ago I did another one on my right. They were both pretty bad as I had to use crutches for more than a week. I did my best following the recovery procedure, but being impatient as I am, I never completed it before going back to play (either volleyball or football). Over the years I haven't stopped playing football and/or volleyball, running, etc, never very seriously but continuously. My right ankle has always giving me problem after the sprain. I think it's deformed since it has always looked bigger than the left. It usually gets swollen after playing or running when put under some stress and sometimes it hurts, etc. It has always been weak.
A month ago I landed on my right foot while playing vball and I sprained the right ankle again. It wasn't that serious because I didnt need crutches but I could not walk well during 2 weeks. Now it's better but still swollen and it hurts not from the joint but from the bottom of the foot.
I've been thinking about what I should do now. I know I can go back to play sports but I may sprain it again and I know it will eventually get worse and worse. It's been so long without taking proper care that I don't know if I still have hope to have a healthy ankle.
Do you think physiotherapy still work for me? If so, what should I look for in a physiotherapist? I know if I call around, probably they will all tell me they can treat ankle sprains .
Is there any other option besides physiotherapy ? Should I consider permanently wearing ankle braces while doing sports?
thanks very much in advance,
-L
