Brief Medical History Overview
spiral fracture to femur in 3 year old
My 3 year old fractured her femur (spiral) after tripping over a balloon. She had four weeks with her leg in traction and came home 2 days later unable to weight bare.
Lucy has been home now for 5 days, thats exactly a week out of traction and you can clearly see that there is a lot of muscle damage to her bad leg. She has begun bum shuffling and lifts her left leg with her hand to get it to go where she wants it to across the floor. She tried weight bearing 2 days ago, and I have been encouraging her throughout the last couple of days after advice from physio but you can see that she is not putting weight on her left leg when I try to encourage her despite sticker charts etc. She was given a tiny walking frame on discharge. It is the smallest you can get but still a bit big and she leans right over the top to take all her weight off and slides her foot across the floor without lifting it.
I hope all this makes sense?
Well I know that recovery is a long process but my worry is that she is now compensating ever so well, so how on earth is her muscles going to get a chance to build up again when she is mastering bum shuffling and lifting her leg with her hand?
I know everyones recovery is different but how long will it be until she is on her feet? I know they said about a month but will this be the case if she does little physio?
The fracture wasn't displaced and there is a good amound of callous (dont know if thats how its spelt) around the fracture now, and I know she is in little pain unless she tries to do too much.
Please help
