    Brief Medical History Overview

Ankle still swollen after 8 weeks (no fracture)

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
Around 8 weeks ago I turned my left ankle - not in the rolled sense but in that it was flat to the floor and got forced inwards (imagine the opposite to a penguin walk!). It swelled and bruised as expected but an x-ray the day after showed no fracture.

The swelling has persisted in all that time so my GP sent me for another x-ray a couple of weeks ago, still no evidence of a mended break.

So - have any of you good people got any help/advice ? I'd say feeling it now that most of the discomfort is at the back of the heal (tendon) when I'm flexing it forwards and backwards.

Would an ankle brace help this type of sprain ?

Hi, It appears from your narration that you have sustained an ankle sprain with a pull of the lateral ligament. And this is why your X-ray is not showing a fracture. Please try to find out any physiotherapist in and around your place who is competent in taping techniques. TAPING OF THE ANKLE, IF DONE CORRECTLY RESOLVES THE PROBLEM WITHIN 24 HOURS.

Re: Ankle still swollen after 8 weeks (no fracture)

    hey,
It possible that xrays miss very small fractures. In that case brace not likely to do much. in that case i think you probably just need to rest for a couple of weeks.

And because u describe the pain as being the worst behind the ankle near the achielies again the brace is unlikely to do much. In my opion, brace is more likely to help if you have lateral or medial pain, rather than posterior pain.

Best off to see an experienced physiotherapist first to get a full assessment. good luck.

    Aircast Airselect Short Boot
Twisting injuries of the ankle less likely to cause fracture. Also, he is reporting pain on the posterior aspect of ankle, where chances of calcaneal fracture with inversion injuries do not happen. Whenever a person sustains inversion injuries of anke, there is a possibility of lateral ligament sprain, and patient can feel pain the posterior aspect if he/she continues to use the foot for walking.
