    Brief Medical History Overview

Ankle locking up after past ligament damage

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Help.

Almost a year ago I suffered a pretty nasty ankle injury playing football/soccer. I came down on the outside of my right foot from having both feet on the floor onto the outside of my right foot. The resulting injury is pitcured below...

Anyway.... This obviously caused me some pain and meant a good 8 weeks of doing nothing.

The night it happened I went to A&E and had an Xray. Their conlusion was, it's not broken, it's a bad sprain. Keep weight off of it until you feel comfortable. So I took their advice and some 8 weeks later began to excercise again. It felt ok for a few weeks until one day I went to get up off the floor and as I turned I felt my ankle lock at the back on the outside between the achilles and the ankle bone.

This continues today and seems to happen when I apply pressure to the front of my feet, lift my heel and move it to the right and lower it whilst leaving the front of my foot planted on the floor. Aside from that it happens sporadically when I do things like get out of a chair, turn sharply when playing football, get out of bed etc.

I went to an NHS physio who told me I have tendonitis of the peroneal tendons and she gave me some stretches to do to increase the movement in my ankle. After a second session she decided to discharge me, even though my ankle still locks.

Does anyone here happen to know what this is? I'm pretty disappointed by the NHS physio, but it's the NHS so I'm not sure what I expected really!

It really hurts when it happens and I really want to get rid of the problem, one day I feel like I could walk through the locking and do some serious damage. I can't concentrate on playing any sports or doing any excercise without worring about it which is really furstrating. If anyone could help me in anyway I would be very grateful.

Can't think of a specific reason for the locking. Have you improved since this post?
Have you had any xrays more recently? sometimes the fracture doesn't show up in the first one.
It doesn't seem like you got the best treatment through your NHS physio. If it is still bothering you you may need to go to a private physio (a good one) and get another opinion.

Re: Ankle locking up after past ligament damage

    Aircast Airselect Short Boot
since this post I've had 4 weeks away from football and it seems to have improved. Instead of locking it now clicks through (relatively painlessly) the point of locking. Suggest to me that perhaps an inflamed tendon or ligament has perhaps recovered slightly?

I will be back to playing football again very soon and if the problem re-appears to the way it was I can safely say the training and playing is the cause. At that point I will certainly consider a private physio.

    Thanks for your help.
