    Brief Medical History Overview

    Ankle stabilisation post surgery

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
I am 2 weeks post op for ankle stabilisation surgery. I have to have plaster for 6 weeks NWB.

When I come out of plaster is it recommended to go into a walking boot while strength is being regained?

I know I will require physio for movement and strength - however I have to know if I am going to buy a walking boot.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Ankle stabilisation post surgery

    Aircast Airselect Short Boot
It depends on your orthopaedic surgeon really. He/she may just immobilise and NWB for 6 weeks - re xray and say your fine now go to physio. or on looking at the second xray they could say you require further NWB or that you have to be PWB for a while - you may be given something special from a orthotist to walk on at that point, or you may not.

Post immobilisation while you start regaining ROM you may find your foot begins to swell again - so buying a new pair of shoes may be futile as you may not fit them.

I would suggest you wait for now until you know whats going on with the rehab - speak to the surgeon and physio regarding appropriate footware.

To be fair - yes your going to want a good shoe with good support while your regaining your strength. but if your worried about having a ankle that will be unstable and needs that support - I think having had 6 weeks NWB immobilisation will give you quite a stiff ankle and the stability of it won't be the main issue.

    hopefully that may be helpful
