Nocturnal leg splints for recurrent calf spasms
Looking for advice on my calf cramps. For the past two years I have been getting very painful calf cramps, usually at night. I try to sleep with my feet flat up against the board of the bed so that they can't point. It seems like any time I point them by accident at night I get a terrible cramp. Ive tried ho packs to relax the muscles, but they are hard as a rock. I was diagnosed with ehlers-danlos syndrome hypermobility type a few months ago, so I am pretty much a mess of spasms, muscle pulls and subluxations. My doctor did every test imaginable (potassium etc) to see if anything else was causing the leg spasms, but she now believes it's probably all because of hypermobility. I drink a lot of water, eat healthy, work out regularly, so i hope my lifestyle isnt to blame). Anyway, she suggested I try nocturnal leg splints as I am not very inclined take medication (i get these crazy calf cramps twice a week). Would night splints be a consideration? Are there any long term risks? Is this something i should go to a physio for or OT? I've gone to Physio for this issue previously, which was very helpful in learning how to stretch properly (which I do a few times daily). Any thoughts would be appreciated, thank you!
