Sustained a medial calf haematoma/gastrocnemius contusion/medial tibial contusion (demonstrated on ultrasound scan) from blunt trauma 5 weeks ago. Swollen for about 10 days despite ice/elevation. Unable to weight bear for 2-3 weeks due to limited dorsiflexion. Been seeing physio for last 4 weeks and been doing graded reintroduction of activity. Am now going back to the gym, but really only doing walking uphill on treadmill and some (but not very much time) on cross trainer but gradually increasing time on both. I am in addition on my feet most of the day as part of my job. I have noticed since going back to the gym that I am getting pins and needles in my foot. I did occasionally get this before the injury but infrequently and usually only occured when HR>180. Now happening every time, usually about 20-25minutes into activity, and clearly HR not hitting anywhere near that! Any ideas on what this could be? A form of chronic compartment syndrome exacerbated by ongoing inflammation from injury?? Suggestions for management? (Have previously just slowed down a bit +/- loosen my trainers which usually works)
