Fracture Healing Time Frame Affected by ORIF?

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
I fractured my lateral malleolus hiking, was seen in the ER and splinted with a followup with an orthopod 5 days later. The ORS doc strongly suggested surgery based on the fact it was a Type 2 displaced fracture and impinging into the ankle joint. I had ORIF 4 days later, which put me at 9 days post fracture. When 6-8 weeks is given as a guideline for return to weight bearing, does that clock start at the time of fracture or ORIF? I'm at 4 weeks post op, still having pain but that might be from soft tissue (grade 2 or 3 sprain on medial side) but am anxious to do something more than crutching around. Have my next visit in 2 weeks but am wondering what is a "normal" recovery period and whether surgery delays or helps bone healing. (I would think revascularization would be negatively affected.)

Thanks. I have a fluoroscope of the brace if that helps.
