Hello,
I have had pain in my right knee for more than a year now. I get the pain slightly lower down from the kneecap and is there almost all of the time. It hurts going up and down stairs. when I squat down its very uncomfortable especially when I push to get back up. If I sit down for a while when I get up my knees (both) seem to stiffen up and take a couple of minutes to loosen up
I have had various dr visits and they think its an issue with the patella tendon. The treatments I have had are: and MRI which showed nothing abnormal (no cartilage/ligament damage), then I had a cortizone injection which didnt help. I was then sent to physio for a few months. The physio focused on stetching calf, hamstring and quad muscles as the physio thought they were tight and needed loosening. Unfortunately this didnt help me. I then went back to the dr who said we will do a knee arthroscopy to look inside the joint and try and find the issue. This was last week and when I got to the surgery the surgeon examined my knee and I explained the pain and symptoms. The surgeon advised me not to get the arthroscopy because the pain I get is near the patella tendon and the surgery is unlikely to help. He noticed my right leg quad muscle is not as strong as my left. This is also clear to me as I can see there is much more definition in my left leg quads than my right. The left one is noticably bigger/stronger. Its particularly noticable on the outer side of my leg. So his advice is to go back to physio and build up those quad muscles in my right leg. I over rely on my left leg now so that must be why its stronger.
I am currently waiting for a physio appointment but I want to make a start with some exercises at home. The issue I have is how do I strenghten the quads without causing knee pain? Squats hurt especially if I bend my knee all the way. If anyone can help me with some exercises I'd very much appreciate it.
Thanks!
