Age: 24, Male, Presenting Problem Since: Unknown, Symptom Behaviour: Constant, Aggravating Factors:: Dorsiflection, Easing Factors:: Nothing that I've done up to now, No Investigations, No Diabetes, No history of High Blood Pressure, No Medications, No Osteoporosis, No Hx of Cancer, No Unexplained Weight Loss, No Bowel/Bladder issues
I seem to suffer from quite a severe restriction in dorsiflection in my right ankle. When performing the lunge test against a wall the difference between my right and left side is very noticeable. I can get exact measurements if needed.
When performing this test (or attempting a bent knee soleus stretch – much the same movement), rather than feeling any stretch in my calf area I just get a very strong pulling sensation from the area running under my medial malleolus. I also notice that my ankle rolls/pronates inwards.
There is a particularly sensitive area in the area underneath my medial malleolus, which if I put pressure on it with my thumb, sends a tingling/pins and needles type feeling through the bottom of my foot and side of my big toe. I also seem to be getting some referred pain in my glute area (not sure exactly where) at the same time.
What I don’t know is how long this has actually been going on. I started suffering from shin splints about 3-4 years ago which led to me not running at all in the last 2 years. It’s only in trying to get back to running again that I’ve noticed. It could have been going on for much longer.
I’m pretty reluctant to start running again until I get this sorted because I assume it will likely lead to further problems.
Injury history:
I sprained my right ankle twice within about an 8 month period when I was 15-16, so 10 years ago now. I never had it treated besides icing it at the time and resting.
Shin splints, initially in right leg and then left. I saw a physio for quite a quite a while but the pain would always come back within a couple of runs.
Other things of note:
I seem to have a very weak tib anterior on my right leg. I’ve also been told I have quite weak glutes, which I’m inclined to agree with.
If any more info is needed in order to give some feedback then by all means let me know.
Thank you.
