Age: 23, Male, Presenting Problem Since: 5 weeks, Medications: Painkillers

    Question Right Knee Meniscus Repair

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hi.

I recently had an arthroscopy on my right knee I had my inner meniscus repaired and my ACL stump shaved.
I currently have a hinged knee brace.
How long will it be till I can walk again?

Im also due for an ACL reconstruction please can you give me an overview of the recovery time for this operation too.
When till I can start going out with my mates again? When can I start working out at the gym again?

The initial injury was caused by attempting a slide tackle at football and getting my studs caught in the turf my knee twisted and 'popped'

    Thanks

    Hi Pablo89,

Generally the surgeon will have a time frame and post surgical protocol that you will need to follow. For what you had initially the surgeon may keep you in the hinged knee brace for 2-4 weeks untill at some point they will conduct the ACL reconstruction. After the ACl reconstruction its generally 2-4 weeks of gentle active range of movement exercises at which time you will be seeing a physiotherapist for gentle quadricep exercises. After 4-6 weeks more weightbearing exercises will be allowed and between 2-3 months is gradual sport specific exercises. Take your time with the rehabilitation and follow 1. surgeon orders 2. physiotherapist exercises/ rehabilitation program.

Here's a link for ACL reconstruction surgery ACL Reconstruction - Physiopedia, universal access to physiotherapy knowledge.

Remember each surgeon is different and also every patient is also different so recovery times may vary.

In very general terms going out with your mates is limited by your mobility and pain so up to you just don't drink as that inflames your knee even more also returning to gym may be after 4-6 weeks from your ACL recon again limited by surgeon and physio orders.

Hope that helps. Don't rush to get into sport though hey.

    K
