Thumbs down Ongoing Knee Injury (Please Help)

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
I injured my knee approximately 15 months ago, not sure how. I woke up one morning with extreme pain in my right knee (i slipped in the shower the previous day which may have caused it but felt no pain when i slipped). I couldn't put any weight on my knee and was in extreme pain. Mainly on the front left hand side and the back right of my knee leading down into my calf. An X-ray showed there was no damage and was referred to a consultant. Without any scan at all, he diagnosed it as a meniscus injury and ordered a knee arthroscopy. However my pre-op uncovered an undiagnosed kidney problem and the operation was cancelled until the kidney problem was sorted.

Over the course of 15 months my knee has progressively become better and i am able to walk on it pain free without any treatment. I went back to the hospital and explained the situation regarding my knee and they performed an MRI on it. The MRI showed no problem with the meniscus, however the consultant said that the lateral ligament might be slightly sprained however it was unclear. He told me to run on it and see what happens. I ran four times (2.5km each time) and my knee felt fine. However after the fifth time, my knee began to hurt again. The pain mainly comes from the right hand side of my knee (I'm no expert but possibly the lateral ligament and IT band?). Any advice of what i should do next, or what it could be.

Having been very sporty and active, being out injured for 15 months is incredibly frustrating with no end in sight. Obviously i could go back to the hospital and explain everything again but the process is extremely slow through the nhs with like a 3 month waiting list just for appointments.

    Anything is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Ongoing Knee Injury (Please Help)

Hi! I also had a soft tissue knee injury that would not properly heal after someone overextended it laterally during Judo practice. I found that in the beginning month or so most of the pain was just due to inflammation and swelling, which I could control with cold packs, however once that had subsided and the pain became a deep low ache during use, the issue had became more trying to heal while still walking and running. I had a lot of advice for physical therapy and deep tissue massages, which helped, and both surprisingly in the same way, they both improve circulation to the area, more blood-flow means more nutrients in the area, more nutrients means you can heal faster. Once I learned that I started looking around to see if there were blood flow stimulation devices sold, and there actually are several kinds out there. I ended up settling on trying one of the King Brand Healthcare products because they are FDA registered, and I would have to say it genuinely helps. I heal about 25% faster when I use it, i.e. something that would take 10 days to recover from now takes about 7, and as I am getting older and heal more slowly, I think I was re-damaging my knee as fast as it could heal by walking on it, and ended up kicking the can down the road rather than actually getting better. Once the rate of healing was improved in my knee, I finally fully recovered and got back to the point of being pain free and having a full range of motion again. If you don't have the time or money for physical therapy, I would recommend trying something like that out, you can strap it on before you go to bed and the wrap helps keep you from bending it too much in your sleep. I hunted down a link if you are interested. Knee Pain Treatment

Have you tried a stem cell treatment? I am a personal trainer and I had a terrible pain in my knee. I kept waking up with pain after an injury; just going to do my shopping was painful. I had to have a knee replacement surgery recently with Dr. Zanasi, I was really happy with the treatment. The recovery was really fast and now I can do my normal activities, as there’s no downtime with this kind of treatment. I highly recommend him, this is his website Home – Dr Zanasi Stem Cells
