I had a shoulder replaced in 2004. I have a good range of motion and, I would say, adequate strength in the joint. With respect to the latter, however, I'm concerned about how much effort I ought to expend to try to strengthen the shoulder. I do some landscaping (which includes wrestling with railroad ties and heavy tractor implements) and I work out with weights two or three times a week at a gym.
A statement and some questions: In the past -- before my shoulder began to deteriorate with osteoarthritis -- I could do fairly heavy bench presses. But since the replacement I can barely do sets with 150 pounds. And I can't seem to make any progress without feeling that I'm straining overly. Are ligaments or tendons attached differently in a replacement joint? If so, would this keep me from making the progress that I want? Most important, am I shortening the useful life of the joint through this kind of work and exercise?
A final point, I do get the occasional stab of pain in the shoulder after a particularly rigorous workout. But it goes away soon and doesn't hinder my work.
By the way, I'm 66 years old and retired.
