    Brief Medical History Overview

Any effects on finger dexterity from punching-bag training?

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
    Hello!

I love music, and I play various flute-like instruments which requires my fingers to be quite dextrous to play the songs.

Now, I am also into martial arts fitness, and have a punching bag at home. I was wondering whether punching bag training (wearing gloves of course) will have any detrimental effects on my ability to move my fingers and hands in my instrument playing?

I did many searches on the net whether there was any relationship between finger dexterity for playing musical instruments and punching, but could not find any. If it is not too much trouble, I would really like an answer.

    Thank you!

Re: Any effects on finger dexterity from punching-bag training?

Hi - i would recommend you practice strengthening the small muscles of your hand and doing dexterity/flexibility exercises for at least as long as you puch the bag.

without assessing your hands, it is hard to say what might happen.

If you have poor ligamentous support for your hands, then it might be bad for you and injure your hands.

If you have good support and strength, it should be ok so long as your punching technique is ok

Without properly assessing you, it is hard to determine.

    Cheers

A few of the basics which are absolutely essential are:

    1) Warm up: the hands and the body
    2) Cushioning, taping, and support: Learn the proper technique before going at that bag else you may really do some damage.

Thank you very much for your responses.

I will definitely apply those extra safety concerns when I do bag training from now on.
I might even avoid punching bag altogether, with alternative martial arts training, such as concentrating on kicking, or weapons.

Once again, your help is much appreciated
