    Brief Medical History Overview

    Can anyone Help (weight bearing)

    Physical Agents In Rehabilitation
Can anyone help me, Ive been to the Hospital today, nine weeks post OP,broken tib, fib and ankle, plates to tib and fib and pins to ankle. Have been asked to try fifty percent weight bearing but am confused as my foot is is nowhere near able to be flat on the floor to start to weight bare, I asked should this weight bearing go through the ball of my foot and the Doctor stated the foot would needed to be flat to take the weight, I cannot wear a shoe because of position and swelling and im unclear how I can proceed, can anyone help or offer advice ??

The healing looks good and repairing well but feel really confused

get a physio referral or find one privately as soon as possible. You sound as if you need help in mobilising your ankle and foot joints and to help to get rid of the post traumatic swelling (oedema) that seems to be established and to start getting into some shoe ASAP. Although the Doctor thinks the fracture sites are up to 50% weight bearing which they likely are, the rest of the leg will not be up to it straight away if you've not stood on it for 9 weeks. That means it probably won't break, but soft tissue, muscles, the rest holding you together may hurt like mad if you go zero to 50% too fast. You'll also limp like mad but with training it'll improve. A physio can assess you and give advice to progess on sensibly. In the meanwhile try elevating your leg on pillows whilst lying supine (on back) to reduce swelling and do active movements of the ankle / foot toes etc to start mobilising. Up and down for the muscle pump of your calf muscles. Knee and hip etc as well. You need thigh and hip muscles back! A physio should give you in addition to what she does a home exercise programm to do yourself as that will count a lot. Good luck

i agree! I think this is really good advice. If you haven't put weight on your leg for 9 weeks everything will be weak, and probably weaker than the bone itself!
