While it is good to know what tests are available when advocating a test we should know the diagnostic accuracy of the test and for what population of people with shoulder complaints the test applies. I would have to look the diagnostic accuracy of these tests as I don't know them off hand. However while some of these tests have adequate accuracy some a fairly useless, and only serve to cloud your differential diagnosis.

Knowing the sensitivity and specificity of the test is helpful but even more useful is the positive and negative likelihood ratios along with the prevalence of the condition in question in your population as you can then work out the probability that your patient actually has the diagnosis based on your test result.

Do you know how to obtain and appraise the research on these tests?

If you are talking about adhesive capsulitis the there is debate about what is the most accurate. Capsule and synovium thickness greater than 4 mm has a specificity of 95% and sensitivity of 70% for adhesive capsulitis

I did manage to find this test: the Coracoid Pain Test.

It is a very simple test of The coracoid pain test is considered positive when the digital pressure on the coracoid area. The test is positive when the pressure evocates a more intensive pain with respect to other shoulder area
This new test purports excellent diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity = .99, specificity=.98). Sounds pretty good eh. Probably too good.

Unfortunately there is only one study and it appears quite flawed in that:
1. the study consisted of a series of people with a variety known diagnoses (case control) rather than a cohort of diagnostic uncertainty; and
2. the same clinician performed the reference standard testing and the diagnostic test so there was no blinding.

The reference standard consisted of a combination of:
 Codmans 12 critieria for adhesive capsulitis
 Shoulder stiffness
 MRI
 radiographs

So interesting test but I would interpret the accuracy with a bit of caution
