    Heat treatments and Rheumatiod Arthritis

I'm doing some case studies for 1st yr of Uni, and one is causing a slight hitch. Pt has RA in her elbow diagnosed 1 week ago, and presents as red and swollen P 8/10. Studies I have read say that heat has no detrimental effects on the joint, and that pts with RA like it merely as a palative treatment and hence may be used as needed. At the moment the redness and swelling is causing concern as to whether i use heat or not. My peers suggest ice for the pain as its not a CI for inflammation and heat is. Is heat treatment contraindicated for a pt who presents with RA that is in this early inflamed stage? Another issue that is troubling me is that it is inflammed, but its been a week. I'm leaning to using a hot pack, but there is just some doubt about it. Feedback would be much appreciated.
