    Physiotherapy (pre-registration) Msc

I wonder if anyone can advise me?
I am 30yrs old, previous degree in Law.. I'm having a total career change and want to train as a Physiotherapist. I have been studying health science related courses via the OU and getting as much work experience as possible.
I was weighing up my options for a while when deciding whether to aim for the Bsc or the Msc and in the end, decided on the latter. I applied and was given an interview which I had this morning.
I must confess that since the interview, I am starting to wonder whether I should have gone for the undergraduate degree instead. I am concerned with the intensity of the course, that my knowledge of anatomy and physiology won't be up to scratch and that the very full time, fast pace nature of the course would be a little too much. Particularly as my hubby and I are considering starting a family soon. I would appreciate any advise as I am now wondering what to do 'if' I'm offered a place? What happens with this course if, hypothetically speaking, one becomes pregnant part way though??

    Hi

I'm actually after some advice from you if possible as I am in a similar situation wanting to apply to do phsyiotherapy as a career change. I wondered which OU modules you took and over how long? I am considering doing the introduction to health and human biology modules. Were you succesful in your ineterview and how much work experience did you obtain before applying?

Many thanks in advance, hope you worked it all out!

    Re: Physiotherapy (pre-registration) Msc

    Hi there,
I went to see the admissions tutor and asked her advise on improving my chances of getting in and was advised to do health science related modules or some kind of access course.
I am studying Human Biology (SK277) at the moment.. I did register for 2 others but ended up struggling to fit it all in around work so decided to cancel for the mean time and just stick with the one. I did get an interview but unfortunately was not offered a place this year. So I'm just going to continue studying through the OU to get as much science as possible under my belt, and try to get as much work experience as possible.
Before the interview I had done 3 work experience placements and they seemed pleased with that. Their main concerns were that I had no real background in science, apart from that which I'm currently studying, and that I'm not actually working in health care or anything related. I'm considering trying to get a few hours health care work per week or something.
I'll definitely be trying again for next year.
Best of luck with whichever route you choose!

    Sammy

    Hi

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly that's really helpful, I've signed up for the OU modules and got my first day shadowing coming up in a few weeks. Are you planning on applying for the MSC again or the undergarduate?

Can I also ask do you know if the msc pre registration is funded or not?

    James

    Re: Physiotherapy (pre-registration) Msc

    Hi again..

I am seriously considering applying for the undergraduate next time.. mainly because I've been advised as to how intense the pre-reg Msc is, i.e., full time 4 to 5 days, 8-4 or 9-5 pw and, if I remember correctly around 1000 hrs clinical placements, + all the work you're required to do at home.
As I am now expecting a baby..something so 'full time' would not really be an option for me, certainly not over the next year or two anyway. Both routes lead to qualifying as a physiotherapist anyway so it's really down to which suits you more.
Re the funding, I was advised that at the moment the Msc is funded but this is currently under review and may be subject to change.
Hope this helps a bit! I wasn't trying to put you off the Msc by the way.. If I had no plans for babies in the near future I would definitely go for the Msc. I'm sure there are those who manage it whilst pregnant and/or with a new born baby but unfortunately, I don't think I'd be one of them.

    Regards,

    Sammy

    Re: Physiotherapy (pre-registration) Msc

The Bsc course is 4.5 days a week 9-5 with a half day on the Wednesday. Last placement I did, I didn't really get the half day and was working pretty much a 37.5 hour week like the band 5's. We also have to hit the 1000 hours of practice by the end of the course. I am guessing that it is mostly around the coursework deadlines that the difference in the two routes is noticed. At the end of my second year on the Bsc now, and I cannot imagine having to hand in all that I have done in half the time. I have struggled (have to work ontop of course to pay rent too) just as it is!

    Hi All,

I have an interview for the MSc in the University of Cumbria and just wondering have any of you heard what kind of reputation this Uni has?

Also any help with what might be asked in the interview would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Re: Physiotherapy (pre-registration) Msc

Hi all... Ironmike, I believe I saw you on thestudentroom!

I think that if you are committed to the profession then you should study it full time, and the MSc is perfect to gear you up for not only full time work, but the demanding role of physiotherapy in healthcare (my opinion as I haven't yet studied it).

But I have some interviews coming up and like the last post... would love to get some advice on the interview process as I have one next week!!!

As far as I'm aware, it shouldn't matter where you get the qualification from as they are all regulated evenly.. hence no rankings for the course.

All courses will qualify you on an even playing field in the NHS... at least thats what I've been told.

    Re: Physiotherapy (pre-registration) Msc

    Hi guys

I think the MSc is a lot of work, especially if you have little knowledge of anatomy and physiology. I did Sports Therapy and numerous work exp placements but I too am more than worried.
I've just graduated from Coventry, where I wasn't always happy with what was going on (results, learning etc). This week I had an intvitation to Univeristy of Brighton.

In a monthm at Eastbourne Campus, I have to complete a Professionalism Essay beforehand and then a group discussion and then an interview. Some posts have been helpful in what the interview holds.

But does anyone know about the Rehabilitation Science MSc at Brighton, just me a hand in what its like and the quality etc.
    Liam.

For EU students they do, I know York St John has alot
